About the Author

My name is Franziska Wittenstein. I am a horticulturist and ethnobotanist living and working in the UK. I was born and raised in northern California, USA, among tall redwoods and douglas firs. As a child, my father often took me for walks in the hills around our home, teaching me the names of the plants, and which ones were good to eat.

My grandparents in southern California had a marvelous garden full of exotic tropical fruits, which also helped to spur my interest in little-known foods. I loved being able to go out into their garden to ‘pick breakfast’ in the early mornings, when dew glittered on every surface and birds coaxed the sun up with their song.

I visited the UK for the first time in 2012, and the following year I found myself living here. I currently work for the Royal Horticultural Society at their flagship garden, Wisley. I maintain this blog in my own time, and it is in no way affiliated with my workplace.

I also edit Wikipedia under the name Ethnobotanical Enthusiast. You can visit my Wikipedia user page here.
